Working-class women, for example, by wearing fine clothing, violated middle-class notions of women's appropriate behavior, thus overturning the social hierarchy. Likewise, working-class men used Sunday clothing to proclaim their equality and celebrated weddings and other ritual occasions with great expense, displaying what the gente decente considered irrational behavior. Through these acts, both men and women asserted for themselves an equality that their social superiors were quick to deny. 4 The first is the central role played by moral or "cultural," rather than economic, criteria in dividing society into groups.

Rather than rely solely on laboring for a wage, a substantial number of workers retained their ties to the land and maintained their loyalties to rural communities. They utilized wages earned in the mines and railroad camps of northern Mexico and the southwestern United States to supplement a subsistence existence on land they owned or worked; these men clung stubbornly to preindustrial values. Managers complained bitterly of their transience and their propensity to disappear during peak periods of the agricultural cycle.
