Their drawings for books contain all of the abstract qualities of esthetic design that distinguish their other works. In order to make clear the progress of illustration as an independent art, we must consider the base as being the Incunabula, or the earliest of books illustrated with crude woodcuts. A step above these, and far above them esthetically, are the superbly beautiful books of the Renaissance. Dürer, one of the greatest of all book illustrators, worked in this period, to the greater glory of the printed book.

The plague that swept London in 1543 accounted for Holbein’s death. Holbein’s fame as an illustrator rests chiefly on his woodcuts, both his Bible illustrations and the celebrated Dance of Death, which remain as supreme examples of the illustrator’s art. No more than three inches square they have the breadth and bigness of a mural. In them is a marvelous economy of line, an extraordinary amount of graphic skill. In them there is dramatic and tragic power, grim and sardonic humor. Death is no mere rattler of bones or a slinking figure of half shadows but rather, paradoxically enough, a living creature endowed with many human qualities.

He was the first artist in Germany who practiced and taught the rules of perspective, and of the proportions of the human figure, according to mathematical principles. His treatise on proportions is said to have resulted from his studies of his picture of “Adam and Eve”. His two principal works on Symmetry and the Figure were published at Nuremberg in 1532 and 1534. These works were written in German, and after Dürer’s death were translated into Latin. The figures illustrating these works were executed by Dürer, on wood, in an admirable manner.
